LA ACADEMIA EN MADRID

Todo el mundo piensa que, como los futbolistas y las estrellas de cine, los montadores freelance llevamos también una vida de fiestas, lujo y glamour. Pero lo cierto es que en cualquier momento puede caerle a uno un curro de esos que te dejan casi un mes sin vida social.
Esto es lo que me ha pasado con un reportaje de 25 minutos que se emite esta noche en La 2 y que he estado montando exclusivamente durante más de un mes. El reportaje trata sobre la nueva edición de la Red Bull Music Academy, que este 2011 se celebra en Madrid.
Para los muy fans, apuntar también que en el doblaje al español de alguna de las entrevistas en inglés puede oírse mi meliflua voz. No tengo dudas de que mi recién estrenada carrera como doblador me lanzará definitivamente a la fama mundial.



THE ACADEMY IN MADRID

Everybody think that, just like soccer players and film stars, we freelance editors also enjoy a life of parties, glitz and glamour. But the truth is that any time you can get one of those gigs that will have your social life reduced to zero.
This is the case of a 25-minute-long TV report I've been editing full time for more than a month. The report, which airs tonight at La 2 (a Spanish nation-wide TV network), is about Red Bull Music Academy's 2011 edition in Madrid.
And just for my biggest fans, I'll point out that in the Spanish dubbed version of the report my mellifluous voice can be heard over some of the English interviews. I have no doubt that my newfound career as a voice-over artist will definitely rocket me to worldwide fame.

DE AMORES DE VERANO Y DIBUJOS AL CARBONCILLO

Aunque ya sabemos todos como está la economía en general, y la industria discográfica en particular, aún hay gente que invierte su tiempo, su dinero y sus energías en tirar adelante proyectos personales. Éste es el caso de Jimmy Malla, un joven cantante y compositor de flamenco-pop que, a sus 23 años, acaba de sacar su primer disco.

OF SUMMER LOVES AND CHARCOAL DRAWINGS

Regardless of the state of the economy in general, and the music industry in particular, there are still people who invest their time, money and energy on their personal projects. Jimmy Malla, a 23-year-old flamenco-pop singer and composer who just released his first album, is one of them.

BREVE CRÓNICA DE UN ENSAYO

A pesar de la leyenda urbana, no es del todo cierto que los Naturalesa Salvatge ensayen telepáticamente desde sus casas. De vez en cuando también se juntan en persona, y valga como prueba este vídeo que tuve ocasión de grabar hará cosa de un mes.
Se trata de un ensayo acústico en el que la banda (en realidad ese día faltó uno de sus miembros) tocó temas de su primer EP más una canción que Arnau acababa de sacarse de la manga.

BRIEF REPORT OF A REHEARSAL

Despite the urban legend, it's not quite true that the guys of Naturalesa Salvatge rehearse telepathically from home. Every now and then they get together to play, and this video I shot about a month ago is a proof of it.
In this acoustic rehearsal the band (one of its members wasn't there that day, actually) played songs from their first EP plus a new theme Arnau came up with.
Wonder at the miracle of live music!

LA CANCIÓN DEL VERANO

Sólo hace un mes que terminó el curso de Videoclip y Documental Musical de LA CASA DEL CINE, pero mis jóvenes y valerosos padawans ya empiezan a dirigir sus primeros trabajos. Eduard Barraguer, sin ir más lejos, acaba de realizar el último videoclip (barra take-away show) de Cola Jet Set, vídeo en el que además colaboré como operador de cámara.
Después de sufrir los rigores del calor de las playas de Mongat, cubrirnos con litros de crema protectora y esperar hasta una hora y media para que nos sirvieran una hamburguesa en un chiringuito (lo de la crema protectora es una exageración, lo de la hora y media fue literal) ya está aquí "No te enamores de mí".



SUMMER SONG

The Music Video and Music Documentary course of LA CASA DEL CINE Film School ended just one month ago, but my young and brave padawans have already started directing their first works. Eduard Barraguer, for instance, just directed the last music video (slash take-away show) of band Cola Jet Set, where I was one of the cameramen.
After suffering the rigors of Mongat beach heat, plastering ourselves with protective cream and waiting for an hour and a half to get served a burger in a bar (the plastering thing is a hyperbole, the hour and a half wait was absolutely real) "No te enamores de mí" is finally here.

For the last two days we've been shooting "Ay Corazón", a music video for Spanish artist Jimmy Malla. While the video is still two weeks far from being finished, here you can see a few making-of pictures. Marta Bazaco, our art director, was so kind as to send me the first three ones.

EN MI NAVE

La web de Radio 3 estrenó ayer "En mi nave", el último videoclip que he dirigido. La canción pertenece al disco "Historias para no romperse" del grupo Cyan, quienes además de ser un grupo cojonudo son unos buenos amigos.

"En mi nave", the last music video I directed, premiered yesterday on Radio 3 website. The song belongs to the album "Historias para no romperse" by Cyan, who are not only an awesome band but good friends of mine.

EGO DE MONTADOR

Hay pocos festivales de cortometrajes que den premios técnicos, y menos aún premios al mejor montaje. El festival de documentales Documenta Madrid sí es uno de ellos, y este año ha decidido reconocer el montaje de "Criterioh". Este premio de suma a los otros dos al mejor montaje que en los últimos meses ha obtenido "La Huída", uno en el festival de Arona y otro en el de Medina Del Campo.
Después de tantas horas fundiéndome la miopía delante del Final Cut, ésas noticias son las que alegran el corazón de este humilde montador.



THE EDITOR'S EGO

There are very few short-film festivals awarding anything beyond best film, best direction or best performance, and even less awarding best editing. Documentary festival Documenta Madrid is one of those few, though, and this year they decided to give the best editing award to "Criterioh". This prize adds to the other two best editing awards for "La Huída" at Arona and Medina del Campo short-film festivals.
After so many hours letting my myopia grow in front of Final Cut, that's the kind of news that makes this humble editor happy.

INVASIÓN EXTRATERRESTRE

Entre 1996 y 1998 fui uno de los creadores, locutores y guionistas (aunque pocas veces íbamos con guión, ésa es la verdad) de un programa de radio de humor absurdo llamado "Más allá de la bilis". Uno de mis proyectos para el programa era, algún día, grabar una radionovela de temática pulp, al estilo de los seriales radiofónicos americanos de los años 30 y 40. Tenía varias ideas en la cabeza, entre ellas una basada en un relato de ciencia-ficción bastante freak titulado "Invasión" que había escrito un par de años antes.
La radionovela y el relato se quedaron en el limbo de las cosas sin hacer hasta que el pasado 11 de abril fue leído en el programa de radio La Rosa De Los Vientos, interpretado con música y las voces de tres actores, bajo el título de "Invasión Extraterrestre".
De repente tengo muchas ganas de ponerme a escribir una radionovela.



ALIEN INVASION

Between 1996 and 1998 I was one of the creators, hosts and writers (although, to tell the truth, there were very few times we wrote anything) of a surreal humor radio show called "Más allá de la bilis" (that would translate to English as "Beyond bile"). One of my projects for the show was, someday, to make a pulp radio serial like those from the 30s and 40s. I had some ideas in my mind, one of them based on a nerdy science-fiction short story titled "Invasion" I had written a couple of years before.
The radio serial and the short story stayed in the things-to-do limbo until last April 11th the story was read at Spanish radio show La Rosa De Los Vientos, using some music and the voices of three actors, under the new title of "Alien Invasion".
Now I suddenly feel the urge to write a radio serial.

UN DÍA EN EL CIRCO

Reconozco que nunca me ha gustado el circo. No sé si es porque de pequeño nunca fui a uno o porque en la tele siempre se empeñan en mostrar el lado más sórdido del asunto. Pero después de montar el videoclip de la canción "El simio asume" de Le Croupier, y ver la cantidad de horas que esa gente (y en concreto los integrantes del Circo Raluy) tienen que ensayar y prepararse para el espectáculo, la verdad es que ahora siento un increíble respeto por esa profesión.

A DAY AT THE CIRCUS

The truth is, I never liked the circus. I don't know if it's because I never went to one when I was a kid, or because they always like to show the squalider side of it on TV. But after editing the music video for Le Croupier's song "El simio asume" and seeing how many hours those people (and particularly the members of the Raluy Circus) have to rehearse and prepare for the show, now I feel an incredible respect for that profession.

ZAPPING

Aunque no soy mucho de ver la tele, el lunes por la noche estuve haciendo zapping y me encontré con que en La 2 justo empezaba el corto "Un novio de mierda" de Borja Cobeaga. Lo vi hasta el final, y luego, ebrio del poder que le da a uno el mando a distancia, seguí cambiando de canal. Si me hubiera quedado en La 2 habría visto que en el programa "Somos cortos", justo después del cortometraje de Cobeaga, emitieron "Manhattan Pictures".
TVE tiene los derechos del corto hasta marzo de 2012, así que supongo que en algún momento lo volverán a emitir.



CHANNEL SURFING

Although I don't use to watch TV very often, last monday I was channel surfing and found that Borja Cobeaga's short-film "Un novio de mierda" was on Spanish TV network La 2. I watched the short until the end, and then, blinded by the power that remote control gives you, I decided to keep changing to other networks. Had I kept watching La 2, I would have seen that, just after Cobeaga's short, they aired "Manhattan Pictures" (in Spanish).
TVE (Spain's public television) got the rights for the short until March 2012, so I guess they'll air it again some day.
