STORYBOARDS EN LA JOSO

Como seguramente he dicho ya mil veces por aquí (porque soy poco original, y porque me gusta presumir, también es verdad) desde el curso 2004-2005 soy profesor de Storyboard y Lenguaje Audiovisual en la Escola Joso, seguramente la escuela más importante de España en lo que a dibujantes de cómic se refiere. Sin embargo los artistas que se forman en ella no sólo se acabarán dedicando al cómic, sino también a otros medios gráficos como la ilustración, el diseño de personajes, la animación o, claro, el storyboard para producciones audiovisuales.
Hace un tiempo que llevo dándole vueltas a la idea de recopilar de alguna forma trabajos de storyboards que alumnos y ex-alumnos han ido haciendo, y al fin la cosa se ha concretado en este blog.

STORYBOARDS AT JOSO

As I've already said a thousand times over here (because I'm unoriginal and because I like to boast, too)  I've been teaching Storyboard and Audiovisual Language since the 2004-2005 academic year at Escola Joso, probably the most important school for comics artists in Spain. But Joso students won't only end up working on comics, but on other media such as illustration, character design, animation and, of course, storyboard for audiovisual productions.
For many time I've been toying with the idea of collecting storyboard works made by Joso students and former students, and finally I came up with this blog (text in Spanish).

LA CIUDAD ES TUYA

Después de un embarazo de tres meses y un parto sin epidural, ya está aquí el último videoclip que he dirigido, en este caso para la canción "La ciudad es tuya" de The Noises. Se trata del primer single de su primer disco, "Bellavista", que no hace mucho que salió al mercado pero está consiguiendo muy buenas críticas.

THE CITY IS YOURS

After three months of pregnancy and a childbirth without epidural, finally the last music video I directed, for The Noises' song "La ciudad es tuya" ("The city is yours" in its English translation) is here. This is the first single from their debut album "Bellavista", which was released not long ago but is already getting great reviews.

UN PUENTE A ANGOULÊME

Hoy comienza la edición de 2012 del Festival Internacional de la Historieta de Angoulême. Si tenéis la suerte de estar por allí podréis ver la exposición "Un Pont Vers Angoulême" que la Escuela de Cómics Joso ha organizado este año. Junto a la exposición se proyectará un vídeo que he estado grabando en las últimas semanas, y para el que he tenido la ocasión de entrevistar a autores de la talla de Josep Homs, Roger Ibáñez, Raule, Cano Santacruz, Oriol Hernández o los hermanos Losilla.
No voy a negarlo, la gente que se dedica al cómic están entre las personas que mejor me caen del mundo.


A BRIDGE TO ANGOULÊME

Today begins the 2012 edition of the Angoulême International Comics Festival. If you are lucky enough to be there you'll be able see the exhibition "Un Pont Vers Angoulême" organized by Joso Comics School. Screened alongside the exhibition there'll be a video that I've been recording in recent weeks, for which I had the opportunity to interview authors like Josep Homs, Roger Ibáñez, Raule, Cano Santacruz, Oriol Hernández or the Losilla brothers.
I will not deny it, those who make comics are among my favorite people in the world.

Dos meses después de grabar la parte del grupo, ayer estuvimos rodando junto a la actriz Anna Gonzalvo los últimos planos del videoclip "La ciudad es tuya" para The Noises. Aquí van unas pocas fotos del día.

¡PON ESA CARA OTRA VEZ!

Esto de pedirle a tu novia que se case contigo es algo que hay que currarse. Hay quien lo hace en las cataratas del Niágara, en la pantalla del Madison Square Garden durante un partido de los Knicks, o con un anillo escondido en un pastel. A mi amigo David se le ocurrió algo diferente.
Su idea era hacer un cómic en el que en cada página se narrara una cita que él y su novia Jennifer habían tenido juntos, y acabar la historia con una última cita en la que él le pedía matrimonio. (Si existe una forma más molona de pedirle a alguien que se case contigo, yo quiero saberla).
Hace unos meses David me pidió que le ayudara con el proyecto, y el resultado es esta página que veis más abajo, que trata sobre las citas a través de videochat que David y Jennifer han mantenido cuando vivían lejos el uno del otro.
David le regaló el cómic a Jennifer hace tres días. Ella, claro, dijo que sí.


MAKE THAT FACE AGAIN!

Asking your girlfriend to marry you is something you have to toil. Some people do it in Niagara Falls, on the screen at Madison Square Garden during a Knicks game, or hidding a ring in a cake. My friend David came up with something different.
His idea was to make a comic book. Every page of the comic would narrate a date that he and his girlfriend Jennifer had had together, and the story would end with a final date in which he'd be asking her to marry. (If there's a coolest way to ask someone to marry you, I want to know it).
A few months ago David asked me to help with the project, and the result is this page that you can see below, which is about the videochat dates David and Jennifer had while living away from each other.
David gave Jennifer the comic three days ago. She, of course, said yes.

HABLANDO SOBRE VIDEOCLIPS

En las últimas semanas he sido invitado a dos eventos para hablar sobre videoclips.
El día 16 estuve dando una conferencia en el CCCB como parte de las actividades del 18 Festival L'Alternativa, y ayer miércoles participé en una mesa redonda sobre la industria del videoclip organizada por el Festival Musiclip.
Pues eso, compartiendo un poco de sabiduría.

During the last weeks I've been invited to take part in two events to talk about music videos.
On November 16 I gave a lecture at CCCB as part of the activities of 18th L'Alternativa Festival, and yesterday I participated in a panel organized by the Musiclip Festival discussing the state of the music video industry in Spain.

El pasado martes días 8 el grupo madrileño The Noises se vino hasta Barcelona para grabar el videoclip de "La ciudad es tuya". Mientras el vídeo se sigue cocinando en post-producción, aquí van algunas fotos del rodaje.

RAFAEL EL MONTADOR

Anoche se celebró la gala de clausura del III Festival de Cortos Subtravelling, a la que acudí en representación del equipo de LA HUIDA para recoger el premio al mejor corto dentro de la sección Campus. Recibí el premio de manos del actor Joan Pera (que presentaba la gala) y del director de cine Kike Maíllo, a los que sinceramente espero no haberles pegado nada porque anoche fui a la gala con 38 de fiebre.
Joan Pera, que leía lo que le habían puesto en la tarjeta, me presentó como "Rafael, montador del corto". Como soy un tipo tímido y educado no me atreví a corregirle. De todas formas siempre fue mi tortuga ninja favorita.



RAFAEL THE EDITOR

The award ceremony of the 3rd Subtravelling Short-Film Festival was held last night. I attended it on behalf of the team of LA HUIDA to collect the Best Short Award in the Campus section. I received the award from actor Joan Pera (who was hosting the show) and film director Kike Maíllo. I sincerely hope I didn't infected them, as I attended the ceremony being feverish because of the flu.
Joan Pera, who was reading what was written in the cards, introduced me as "Rafael, the editor". I didn't know how to correct him without sounding rude. Anyway, it was always my favorite ninja turtle.

LA ACADEMIA EN MADRID

Todo el mundo piensa que, como los futbolistas y las estrellas de cine, los montadores freelance llevamos también una vida de fiestas, lujo y glamour. Pero lo cierto es que en cualquier momento puede caerle a uno un curro de esos que te dejan casi un mes sin vida social.
Esto es lo que me ha pasado con un reportaje de 25 minutos que se emite esta noche en La 2 y que he estado montando exclusivamente durante más de un mes. El reportaje trata sobre la nueva edición de la Red Bull Music Academy, que este 2011 se celebra en Madrid.
Para los muy fans, apuntar también que en el doblaje al español de alguna de las entrevistas en inglés puede oírse mi meliflua voz. No tengo dudas de que mi recién estrenada carrera como doblador me lanzará definitivamente a la fama mundial.



THE ACADEMY IN MADRID

Everybody think that, just like soccer players and film stars, we freelance editors also enjoy a life of parties, glitz and glamour. But the truth is that any time you can get one of those gigs that will have your social life reduced to zero.
This is the case of a 25-minute-long TV report I've been editing full time for more than a month. The report, which airs tonight at La 2 (a Spanish nation-wide TV network), is about Red Bull Music Academy's 2011 edition in Madrid.
And just for my biggest fans, I'll point out that in the Spanish dubbed version of the report my mellifluous voice can be heard over some of the English interviews. I have no doubt that my newfound career as a voice-over artist will definitely rocket me to worldwide fame.

DE AMORES DE VERANO Y DIBUJOS AL CARBONCILLO

Aunque ya sabemos todos como está la economía en general, y la industria discográfica en particular, aún hay gente que invierte su tiempo, su dinero y sus energías en tirar adelante proyectos personales. Éste es el caso de Jimmy Malla, un joven cantante y compositor de flamenco-pop que, a sus 23 años, acaba de sacar su primer disco.
Aquí abajo os dejo "Ay Corazón", el videoclip que dirigí para Jimmy el mes pasado y que hace poco se estrenó oficialmente.



OF SUMMER LOVES AND CHARCOAL DRAWINGS

Regardless of the state of the economy in general, and the music industry in particular, there are still people who invest their time, money and energy on their personal projects. Jimmy Malla, a 23-year-old flamenco-pop singer and composer who just released his first album, is one of them.
